Advertising, Distribution & Posting of Promotional Materials
Introduction
Many requests are made of East Elementary to share information by programs in the community. The requests are usually to post advertisements and distribute promotional materials. These requests are made regularly and often. We used to grant these requests and found that parents would not read our own school communications because they had become so accustomed to opening their child’s backpack to find advertising. We also found that most promotional materials only affected an extremely small group of our students though we were sending home 550 flyers.
ICSD Policy on Advertising, Distribution & Posting of Promotional Materials
ICSD policy Advertising, Distribution & Posting of Promotional Materials (KJ) highlights that “students and employees are not considered to be captive audiences to be used for the purpose of conveying information, nor is the District a convenient advertising mechanism for organizations to use.” It also specifies that the district’s electronic pages “are to be used only for school district business.” It explains that anything we send home from school to parents should be “coming from the school district, and it is important to the education of their children, not just another piece of junk mail to be discarded.”
East Elementary Policy on Advertising, Distribution & Posting of Promotional Materials
East Elementary will follow the intent of the district policy and only send home information with its students and post electronic information that originates with East Elementary and its programs.
East Elementary will allow organizations whose activities are for school-aged children and free of charge to bring 3 posters and 50 flyers. We will hang the posters on our community information bulletin boards and we will place the flyers in our office for interested individuals to take.
